Massive 8.0 Earthquake in Peru

August 16, 2007

Prayers go out for the families and the emergency workers near Chincha (nearest the epicenter), Ica and northward to Lima the capital of Peru.

The first quake of 8.0 was about 6:30pm 8/15/07 with about fifteen of 5.0 aftershocks overnight, another quake of 6.3 about 11:30p and then another 6.0 quake about 5:30am 8/16/07

The times are approximate and just to quickly note the frequency and severity of these quakes. The USGS Geological Society has an excellent site. The first shows the number of quakes in a list for South America

And the second shows the worldwide location of recent quakes during the last 7 days.

These pages should reflect the situation of 8/15 and 8/16/07 for a day or so. After that, they may be dynamic and change the dates.
