No Child Left Behind…The Digital Gap/Divide…

December 22, 2007

I’ve heard the hype about the OLPC (One laptop per child) that Negraponte is heading up. There are others working on low cost laptops allegedly for third world countries and perhaps in the states too… To address the alleged digital gap… O no…

Firstly….
The OLPC looks good in the pics. Fine..
So….the one that the child in the alleged third world country gets ….( I can only speak from experience in rural Peru and Chile….but there’s…umm most of those countries without rural electricity…and sharing a high speed internet link?…you would be lucky in most places even in a city to find a dialup …so..the net sharing thing…like a nancy pelosi idea gone terribly impractical. Hmmm And maybe clean water and sewage trump playing (i mean learning) online?

Secondly…
I’ve have been chewing on the “digital gap/divide” a lot lately though as I see more and more of the US high tech folks on the sidelines working in “service” jobs… and the supposed advanced learning and skills….

To be honest, most of those kids, if they are lucky enough to get a job at all, will need the 3R’s, a clean shower and decent breakfast. The UI on the cash register or kiosk is aimed at the lowest common denominator. There will be a VERY small percentage that will actually end up being techs. In case you all havent noticed…more and more of thats in India or where the lowest cost is…

And just like in the states, if there aren’t many or any good, high paying jobs at the end of this skill building and this kid is still shoveling llama dung….or growing coca plants….Umm yeah.

At that point, they can become bloggers, play WOW and check out some PRON…in a desolate village? Nice.

More on this as I get a chance.

Adam Carolla on the New Dr. Drew Live RadioTalk Show

December 19, 2007

There is wierd crap going on with the Ace man on his morning radio gig on Free-fm as he’s been sick…for a while. Danny and T are hanging on…now they are on official holiday hiatus…

Then, he is on the new morning talk show for Dr Drew on Dr Drew Live on 1260 KGIL in LA. on Wednesday 12/12/2007

Felt like old times as Adam calls in to Drew and then resumes sidekicking as they field some caller questions.

http://www.1260.am/programming/podcasts/?date=12/12/2007

It is the bottom link on that page for 12pm. It starts with news and then Adams call in….(Don’t freak out…as Anderson….yeah that Anderson….left several minutes of silence in these mp3 files where the commercials went)

To quote an old show…(Adam to Anderson) “So… an empty vending machine is broken?….or just out of peanuts…?”
We love Anderson!

Best wishes to Drew on yet another new show and to Adam as the other wierdnesses are sorted out.

It was disheartening to see a few blogs talking trash about Adam…. Im certainly a Carolla fan. Hang in there guys!

The Peaches and Herb stuff and “the worst of the 70’s” was pretty cool. (I’ve said it before and will say it again, these guys have one of the classic comedy chemistries of all time and it would be cool if some form of this continues. Remembering that when Adam and Drew have individually been on with TomGreen, one of the first questions is….when are you guys doing Loveline again? )

“Rekindling the Love..”…..yes indeedy dee……

Some New TV Shows Despite the Writer’s Strike…

December 19, 2007

New Late Night with Conan O’brien as well as, Late Show with David Letterman starting January, 2, 2008 albeit sans writers except the hosts themselves. Carson Daly has already returned to production.

When I messaged Spike Feresten… He gave a very George Bush reply… something like… I havent ruled it out (going back in Jan)   So they may return with TalkShow
…or just bomb Iran…

We’ll stay with that story as it develops.

Btw, I’m not against what the writers are concerned about, but it will be nice to see fresh stuff on TV. The thought of the onslaught of “reality” shows and games shows is depressing….

In a related story…just saw a promo for American Gladiators…yeah thats some wore out crap from the 70’s or 80’s haha

It Was Sobering and Sickening to See…

December 15, 2007

It was more than sobering to see a Sheriff’s Commissioner’s Sale notice on a house in my neighborhood today. In all my years I’d never seen one on a property near me. (and yes there certainly have been those sales throughout the years)

I’m not sure if it was a case where this person got sucked into one of those horrible ARM (Adjustable Rate Mortgages) or if there was a job loss, bad decisions or bad health… The property was evidently financed by Citigroup Financial. But, I don’t any of the particulars of this situation.

It was however a sharp kick in the stomach to remind me just how bad things are for what used to be a middle class in the United States.

It does sicken me to see the media just spin a lot of the bad situations as a mortgage crisis. It’s just not that simple. And certainly I know how bad the job market is and has been for at least the last 10 to 15 years.

And certainly when 12 million of anyone invades the country and further loads down an economy that already was predicting that the next generations won’t have medicare, pension or retirement… …. that I see an elderly parent and relatives count on for survival….

Then to further have to listen to someone like Bill Clinton and Bill Gates and others blather on about what they are “giving back”…. except it’s in some other country….(not usually the one that raised them up…by the way)

Yeah the whole evil mess just leaves me with a pit in my stomach…. and my prayers go out to that family…

This is no longer politics.

More Gestapo Government from the Democrats…

November 29, 2007

In Massachusetts, there is more big government legislation in the works… this time to make spanking a child illegal…

Now, I’m obviously NOT condoning actual child abuse.

But, I’m absolutely against the ever growing government meddling in the daily personal lives of people. And I witness on a daily basis, kids that receive less and less supervision and discipline which absolutely includes the occasional spanking.

The government rules and regulations will eventually have everyone in jail or in court EXCEPT the hard core criminals….

Please, knock it off.

Take all this government energy and round up the illegal invaders 10 at a time and send them home. That should keep you busy for several years…

More to come on this as I get time…

Steve Fossett…Umm Let’s Declare Him Dead

November 27, 2007

This is an odd one.  This multimillionaire disappeared in early September on a solo plane trip and no one seems to have found even wreckage and now his wife is ready to move on and get to the estate settling.

Hmmm. Is it just me?  Or wouldn’t there usually be an endless search and media stir til they found at least something?  No cell phone? No nothing?  Really?

It feels like there will be a “rest of the story” on this one eventually…

Malaysia to Make and Export…”Islamic” Cars

November 12, 2007

Sometimes news items just leap on the wordpress all by themselves… I guess the other cars of the world just didn’t have enough “bang” for the Buck ….. anymore.

I’m guessing they are using that Pinto design that was ahead of its time.

Looks like they will call this model…the “Proton”.. As names like..
“the Surge”
,
“Boom”,
“Bam”,
“Terrorist” and
“Jihad”
were already taken by other car makers…

The features include (and as Dave Barry would say… I swear Im not making this up…)

Proposed by Iran, the collaboration would include installing features in automobiles such as a compass to determine the direction of Mecca for prayers, and compartments for storing the Quran and headscarves.

Colbert Screwed By SC Democrats…

November 2, 2007

So the elitest democrats can just see someone they don’t want on the ballot and just take a lil private vote and eliminate them? Really? Isn’t that corruption? Isn’t that illegal? O, I forgot, the democrats know what we need.

Where’s the bipartisan investigation into this corruption?

I think Stephen Colbert should kick it up a notch and run as independent so that honest citizens can show both parties the door.

Both parties assume that a Micheal Bloomberg or other independent can’t compete with their lobbyist and elitest monies.

Just Hose em Down…Dr. Phil (Late Show with David Letterman)

November 2, 2007

I woke up last night partway through Letterman’s show to hear Dr. Phil reply to Dave’s apparent question about young kids needing birth control.

Something to the tune…In Texas if you got dogs grindin in the yard,…Just hose em down..Just hose em down.

After a few bursts of….what? and laughter…I just went back off to sleep.

Tried to find this interview on Google and Youtube but so far nothing.   If anyone has a link on this jewel of wisdom, please pass it on.  Haha

Ahmed al-Janabi, a 45-year-old father of three…

October 26, 2007

This whole Iraq war is ugly, but this sickened me even more than usual tonight.

Ahmed al-Janabi, a 45-year-old father of three was shot multiple times in his eyes, and killed for what was on his ID cards. He was a teacher and father of three children. A Sunni.

I expect hellish amounts of public denouncement in outrage from all muslim countries over this, but especially the shiite ones.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071025/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

Frankly, every arab muslim leader should pledge to stop the violence in memory of this innocent teacher.

Tavis Smiley and Cornell West…Charlie Rose (PBS)

October 25, 2007

It was a treat (even though I didn’t see all) to see most of an interview of up and coming talk show host Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornell West, professor of Religion at Princeton on the Charlie Rose show on PBS tonight.

Items that struck me included…

Tavis cited a philosophy of… You can’t lead people if you don’t love people, you can’t save people if you don’t serve people.

The 2008 election in light of that philosophy, left many in both main parties looking like hollow, “pretzel”-like transformer typical politicians….

Tavis noted several “empty podiums” in recent debates (Republican) and that the “empty podiums” would likely come back to haunt these candidates later in the election cycle. One of these situations was a Republican Forum that Tavis moderated at Morgan State University.

Dr. West went on to admonish candidates from both parties to “find your voice” and”be who you are”.

Tavis agreed and cited a hunger in the voting public looking for “authenticity” in a candidate.

I didn’t realize that Tavis had a radio show on PRI that airs on some NPR stations in addition to his PBS talk show. Dr. West is a long time friend and appears on his show and has a current book with SmileyBooks company.

Jimmy Kimmel…Whose Dumbazz Idea Was This?

October 23, 2007

Well, an interesting week is underway for Jimmy Kimmel. Or as he will become known… “Super Jimmy”. I guess this was mostly for the dual show promotional bang and Jimmy has always been known for his good natured pranks.

In case you have been living under a rock in the states, or are one of my international readers, Jimmy will fly each night from LA to New York to co-host with Kelly Rippa (in place of vacationing Regis Philbin) this whole week. (then fly back to smoky LA each afternoon for Jimmy Kimmel Live.

It was funny to hear him quip last night as he interviewed the first day co-bi-coastal traveller Kelly Rippa…I really can’t believe we have to get right back on that plane tonight….and…Whose dumbazz idea was this anyway?

Then they threw the spotlight to Gelman (Regis and Kelly producer) and another producer guy for Jimmy.

Usually Carolla is in the middle of Jimmy’s pranks.

I guess the Ace man will be locked down this time for his morning radio gig.

-Day 1 – pretty tired

-Day 2 – somewhat back with it

-Day 3 – delirious (but less than Marie Osmond)

-Day 4 – Oh crap? Time will tell…(I went to sleep, haha)

-Day 5 – I went to sleep on J & Rippa. Jimmy Show on rerun?

Was the Friday Kimmel show supposed to be a repeat?

Oh crap!

More on this as the week progresses…

Sam Donaldson on InnerViews (PBS)

October 22, 2007

Saw an interesting interview with legendary ABC White House correspondent Sam Donaldson on InnerViews with Ernie Manouse.

This link gets back to a reference for that talk show although I don’t see a link for the Donaldson interview yet.

http://www.houstonpbs.org/site/PageServer?pagename=con_innerviews_ernie&JServSessionIdr009=1ec5gqfq31.app26a

He made some interesting observations about how more and more the News business is more and more about making money and the resulting lower quality and how it’s driven to become more entertainment to keep ratings.

Barack Obama is Kin to America and You Can Too

October 22, 2007

What is the obsession about Barack Obama’s heritage? Saw his appearance a week or so back on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and when Jay asked about the newest geneology connecting him to Dick Cheney…

He replied that he wouldn’t be attending the family hunting expedition.

I thought he handled this distraction well.

So he’s kin to everyone… Now can we get back to letting this man and his family address real issues pertinent to the presidency… Mahalo…

Here is the first Barack Obama geneology distraction via CNN.

http://mrobvious.wordpress.com/2007/03/04/per-cnnbarack-obama-was-kin-to-who/

The title was a take off on the new book from legendary comedy guy Stephen Colbert.

A Police State?

October 16, 2007

This posting about Ellen not being able to give away a dog that she rescued from the pound is in line with a lot of BS that seems to be getting worse. This situation isn’t quite as bad, but it’s the same idea.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071016/ap_on_en_tv/people_degeneres

For one, it’s almost like animals have more rights than humans. But then that isn’t even consistent. If you some how “neglect” a dog, you might end up in jail. Ellen didn’t adopt a kid, she rescued a dog that would eventually be “put down” (I mean killed)

But, then there is huge pressure on you to spay/neuter (I mean cut off nads) of the same dog. I’m sure the dog is so much happier after you cut part of his biology off.

Of course, there can be animal population issues in certain parts of the country and the general premise of some of this is common sense.

It just seems like the regulations have taken over!

You are far more likely to hear about someone being legally punished in some way for neglect of a pet or their yard, than you are of hearing about punishment of actual hardcore crime now.

Are the courts and prisons full of people that forgot to water their dog one day or that let the weeds get an inch too high?

And when did this kinda stuff start getting such focus? Arent there drug dealers and crack houses and terrorists and people that illegally invaded our country to go after as a higher priority?

Some are calling this the “nanny” state. Knock it the F off.

More to come on this as I get a chance.

A few words to pay tribs to one of the funniest movies of all time from comedy legend Mike Judge. Especially if you work in or deal with big corporate Amercia, this will explain a lot.

Here is a site that I came across that pays tribute to this great movie.

Google Gobbles Jaiku…

October 9, 2007

It’s not clear if or how big a deal this one is. FYI. Google is THE search engine and quickly added all things map and now online office type apps.

Jaiku was owned by a finnish company and let you have a “conversation” on its site. Basically the “conversation” is threaded, meaning you can come back within is some period of time and see what others posted relating to your posting. That flow tended to be over a period of a few hours or a few days.

Twitter is similar but not as easy to find the responses and has a fast party-like pace where you can leave a “What are you doing” post and others may or may not reply/post relative to that.

So, as I understand it, Google gobbled jaiku today. Evidently Google had a similar app called Orkut already? That was the first I had heard of that today.

Will it be sad? or good? Ya veremos…

The Dumbing Down of America…The “Service” Economy

October 9, 2007

Whilst chewing on a lead painted toy… sometimes a Post title comes to you before the body does. This just felt like a topic that needed a few words of exploration.

So we communicate more and accomplish less?

But we are busier than ever?

But more stressed, exercising less and getting fatter by the minute.

Do we really need more computers in the schools? I used to think you could justify it in math and science classes. Maybe this is really crippling the lower level imagination process that has to form in your brain.

More on this one as I have time.

CAFTA, NAFTA, Great!

October 7, 2007

I see a blip on a yahoo news about a CAFTA free trade agreement getting ready to be voted on in Costa Rica Sunday, October 7, 2007.

Already approved in the states? Really? After all the damage NAFTA has caused to US jobs and workers? Really? Where is our cracker jack media in reporting this? Oh, prolly Britney or Lindsay or Paris had more important stuff to distract us with.

Dr Drew on the Adam Carolla Radio Show

October 5, 2007

Holy Crap, Dr. Drew and Adam Carolla on the radio… at the same time. That maybe the first time since Novemeber 2005.

Not sure why Adam finally got around to this, but it was long overdue.

http://www.971freefm.com/pages/1247.php

That comedy team chemistry is immediately obvious and much missed!

Now that the taboo (not Taboo 2) line has been crossed, maybe there will be more? Could they finally make good on the Adam as a guest on Lovelines?

Even Dr. Drew as an ocassional “Ask the Love Doctor” bit on Adam’s show would be nice.

Stay tuned… Oh Yes.

George Carlin on the Adam Carolla Radio Show

October 5, 2007

Hey, hey,,,George and the Ace Man! I just saw this and didn’t get a chance to listen to the download yet. But, this should be good stuff!

http://www.971freefm.com/pages/1247.php

Two of the funniest guys on the planet on the same show.
________________________________________

This was limited to an interview style format.

Adam and crew ask George about how he does what he does and I was surprised to learn that George pretty much scripts out his shows. I’ve seen him like three times and he is a master of this comedy monologue.

Also, George revealed that he is really only comfortable being humorous in smaller groups other than the stage performance.

I don’t think George has been on “Comics Unleashed” with Byrron Allen, but that would be sweet. Especially if he were to be on one of the few that Adam Carolla will appear on.

Also, they mentioned that George is like 71 also. Get out. Just like when Alan Alda was on Charlie Rose, you hear that and think..No way. Maybe in his 50’s? Adam very appropriately gave George his propers for him still being edgy and on the top of his game.

Awesome, thanks guys!

Salvia on Nightline with Terry Moran (ABC)

October 5, 2007

There was a “reporting” piece on Nightline with Terry Moran about some latest “legal” tripping drug called Salvia.

The flippant tone of that piece was unfortunate and disturbing.

They kept re-showing the youtube postings and then at the end they showed some wierd fadein/fadeout linking of several of the tripper video postings back to back.

I usually like Nightline, but this one was really disappointing. Drug use is a horrible mess for those and their families that get hung up in it. Uh, not that funny there Terry Moran at Nightline… Was it sweeps week or something?

Alan Alda had a great segment on Charlie Rose. Wity as always, and he and Charlie reflected on recent health calamities that nearly ended their lives and how they re-assessed the important things in life and how those situations changed them.

Can you believe Alan is like 71? Get out. You would guess 50’s. Maybe it’s his contageous smile and laughter.

Jenna’s New Book…is Free Promotion…and NOT News

September 30, 2007

I call on the media (and the free loading author) to be taxed for providing/receiving free promotion. For the most part (except for say a Harry Potter book), other authors competing in the marketplace are put at a competitive disadvantage with this free promotion (I mean news).

I’ve been hearing and seeing blurbs for the past few days about Jenna Bush’s new book.

This is NOT news and it should stop being allowed to masquerade as news. If it was taxed and it caused the media outlets and the author financial accountability, maybe it would stop. At least a slightly more level playing field could be achieved.

Actually, am I looking for more nutty taxes to pay? No. The real point is free promotion being allowed to masquerade as news.

More to come on this as I get a chance…
